SELVI
Selvi continues to search for information about Andavan's disappearance by showing people along the beach his picture. After many shakings of the head by various people, she runs into a vendor who says he recognizes Andavan. He used to walk on the beach, he says. When she probes further, he gets leery, and refuses to say any more. Ask the guy there who's singing, he says, pointing to the fellow with a drum, who was there the day Andavan was kidnapped. She approaches him. He continues singing without answering her. Finally she says the ultimate tug to the Tamil heartstring, "I am asking you as my brother". That does it. He leads her to a spot on the sand where something has been buried. No, not Anadavan's body. It is an ID car for a driver of a taxi service. Selvi thanks him and takes it.
Minor interlude of Prabanchan. He is working four jobs, including the first one as a delivery boy, then a gas station attendant, a waiter, and then in the nights, at a mechanic's shop. At one of the homes where he delivers papers, a girl is attracted to him and follows him around. The next day she waits for him, adn asks him some questions. He says he has no time to talk, and rides on.
GJ goes to visit KArthan and Andavan. This is a faraway place along the coastline. He reaches an abandononed builidng (or one under construction) He tells the driver (whose ID Selvi now has) he needs Andavan's signature on a blank sheet. James promises to get it for him. Karthan is shown tied to a pillar, bloodied.

Anjali's story continues...
Akash tells his two buddies about Sunil and Anjali. They write a big note on the cement floor linking Anjali and Sunil in the college quadrangle, where everyone can see it. Anjali is distraught, but consoled by Jamuna. Later Jamuna confronts Akash, who plays innocent. Next scene, Anjali is shown with great resolve. A group of girls, including Jamuna are sitting in the cafeteria. Suddenly all of them leave, and only Manohar and Ravindran are left. The shut the door, and Ravindran puts his hands on her shoulders. She is petrified.

Scene I
NK continuing with the story of Gandhimati to Sivagami.
NK tells Sivagami how he sent Gandhimati away with Gnyanavel, all the
time sure he could convince his mother to agree to their marriage.
He says that Gandhimati and Gnyanavel were well taken care of by
Gnyanavel's boss, but that no matter what he could think of, he
couldn't figure out how to make his mother agree. He tells how he
would often visit Gandhimati during that time, and that during one
visit, he got some shocking news....
Scene II
Gandhimati's house
NK is visiting Gandhimati. She offers to cook him a meal and goes
outside to cut vegetables and start cooking. NK follows her outside
and keeps her company. As they are talking, suddenly Gandhimati
becomes nauseated and we are subjected to the unwanted visual of her
throwing up and feeling a little faint. NK walks her back inside and
makes her sit down. he runs out to find the village paati and brings
her back inside. Paati asks him to wait outside while she checks on
Gandhimati's health. She yells at Gandhimati that she should have
waited until she was married before succumbing. Gandhimati is
confused. Paati yells some more and says you're
pregnant...Gandhimati is shocked! Paati continues, asking how one
could be pregnant for FOUR months and not know it??? Gandhimati begs
Paati to help her abort the child. Paati tells her that it's too
late to do that, and that Gandhimati's life would be in danger is she
tried to abort. Paati goes outside to NK and yells at him for doing
this to Gandhimati before marriage. NK is stunned. Paati threatens
him to marry Gandhimati right away. She tells him how Gandhimati
asked her to abort the child and that it is impossible at this
stage. (Sidebar: Having been a mom twice myself, I found the sudden
nausea and faintness FOUR months into the pregnancy a little
ridiculous. I personally have never heard of morning sickness
STARTING in the second trimester; usually those symptoms have come
and gone by then. Secondly, how stupid can Gandhimati be to not know
she was pregnant four months into it? Che. Silly, silly writers).
NK goes back inside and consoles Gandhimati. he tells her not to try
aborting the baby, and that he would try to speed things up with his
mother. She tells him that she is no longer worthy of him and that
the baby is a curse. He chastises her and tells her that the baby
was not responsible for what happened to her and that the innocent
life should not be taken. he warns her that if she tries to get rid
of the baby, her life would be in danger, and that if anything
happened to her, he couldn't take it. He tells her to have faith.
Gnyanavel comes in angrily. Paati has told him everything. He asks
NK what he plans to do now. NK says he'll be back in the evening,
with hopefully good news.
NK returns in the evening to loud arguing in Gandhimati's house.
Gnyanavel is asking Paati how she could agree to abort the baby when
Gandhimati's life would be in danger. He tells Paati to leave.
Gnyanavel yells at NK again. He accuses NK of trying to trick
Gandhimati. he tells NK he has to tie a thaali on his Akka's neck
RIGHT now. He grabs NK by the shirt and threatens him. Gandhimati
comes running out and asks Gnyanavel to back off. She says Gnyanavel
is a "treasure" to her, and that she has full faith in him. She
starts to tell Gnyanavel about what really happened, but NK stops
her. He tells Gnyanavel he would not desert Gandhimati. Nk
reassures them both again. Gnyanavel storms off. NK swears to
Gandhimati that no matter what happens, the child growing inside her
would always be HIS son.
Scene III
NK's house
NK is sitting outside on the porch, depressed. NK's mom is asking
what's wrong with him. he yells at her for bugging him. She asks NK
to get some water from the well. He refuses and tells her to do it
herself. She goes off to the well. NK has flashbacks of his
meetings with Gandhimati. Villagers are seen escorting NK's mother
back home. She apparently fell in the well while trying to draw
water, and has hurt her head. The villagers are asking why she was
doing that kind of work when NK is home and doing nothing. NK is
repentant. Doctor comes to check on his mom. NK asks whether his
mother's life is in danger. Doc asks him to step outside and tells
him that the head injury is very serious and that there has been
brain damage. He says that she will probably not survive too much
longer and that NK should start preparing for her death.
Scene IV
Sivagami and NK in present time sobbing....
